High-voltage transmission towers are among the most important infrastructures in electrical facilities, and their operational status determines the stability and safety of the entire power grid. Traditional methods such as manual inspection, robotic line inspection, aerial digital photography line inspection, and various sensors on the towers are currently the main means of monitoring the safety status of the power grid. However, these methods have shortcomings such as limited monitoring range and limited operation under harsh environments and large-scale disaster conditions. In order to ensure the safe and stable operation of these backbone power grids, it is urgent to research and develop wide-area monitoring technology for power grids under large-scale disaster weather.

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is an active, high-resolution imaging radar operating in the microwave band, and is a crucial remote sensing tool. With the development of SAR technology, the resolution of SAR images has been significantly improved.
For example, the following is an X-band power line monitoring image acquired by our company's miniature SAR system, mounted on a multi-rotor UAV, near a power tower area in Kunshan. It features both single-polarization and multi-polarization capabilities. Using high-resolution SAR images, changes in power lines, the condition of power towers, power line sag, and foreign objects can be identified.

The groundbreaking application of UAV-borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technology has provided a completely new solution for power line monitoring. Firstly, it offers all-weather, all-time monitoring capabilities, unaffected by weather conditions. Secondly, the high-resolution imaging capabilities of SAR technology make monitoring results more accurate and reliable.
Here are some core applications of airborne SAR for power line monitoring:
Vegetation Encroachment Monitoring: SAR can penetrate the tree canopy to detect vegetation growth within transmission corridors. Combined with time-series analysis, it can predict the safe distance between trees and power lines, avoiding short-circuit risks.
Disaster Emergency Identification: After disasters such as typhoons and earthquakes, SAR can quickly assess the impact of power facility damage in disaster areas, pinpointing short-circuit and collapsed lines, providing high-precision navigation for repairs.
Icing and Snow Accumulation Assessment: SAR's microwave signals are sensitive to the moisture content of the medium, allowing for quantitative analysis of conductor ice thickness, aiding in de-icing decisions.

Our company's UAV airborne SAR technology plays a crucial role in power line monitoring. It not only improves the efficiency and accuracy of power line inspections but also provides strong support for deformation monitoring of power facilities, environmental monitoring, and emergency response. With continuous technological advancements and the expansion of its application areas, UAV airborne SAR technology will play an even more important role in the power industry, contributing to ensuring the safe and stable operation of power lines.
