Tianjing Yunhu | W-band Miniature SAR: A New Tool for Millimeter-Level Sensing

Browse: 122 Time: 2026-01-27

I. Definition

Within the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) family, the W-band (75GHz-110GHz), with its unique high-frequency advantages, has become a "detail hunter" in the field of precise perception. Compared to traditional band SAR, the W-band achieves ultra-high imaging accuracy at the 0.1-meter level thanks to its extremely short wavelength, while also possessing lightweight characteristics, making it particularly suitable for airborne platform applications. This has opened up broad application prospects in both military and civilian fields, becoming an important support for technological empowerment of security and development.

II. Application Areas

(1) Civil Applications

A. Power Grid Inspection: Drones equipped with this band of SAR can flexibly navigate power transmission corridors between urban buildings and mountain valleys. With a resolution of 0.05 meters, they can detect millimeter-level cracks in insulators and tiny foreign objects on conductors, achieving a daily inspection efficiency of hundreds of kilometers, far exceeding the 10 kilometers/day of manual inspection.

B. Disaster Emergency Response: Its penetration advantage is even more prominent. At disaster sites such as landslides and floods, it can penetrate smoke, dust, rain, and fog to accurately transmit key information such as the affected area and water depth.

C. Resource Management: Combined with deep learning algorithms, it can accurately distinguish tree species, monitor forest pests and diseases, and sensitively detect soil moisture.

(2) Military Applications

A. Camouflage Assessment: This band of SAR can penetrate camouflage nets, clearly revealing details such as the track outlines and metal parts of armored vehicles. Even if the target's engine is off, it can capture minute vibrations of 0.1 Hz, quickly completing target identification and location.

B. Battlefield Reconnaissance: W-band SAR can be integrated into small combat platforms such as micro-UAVs and armored vehicles, enabling "observation through walls" in urban warfare. It transmits real-time images of indoor personnel activities and obstacle distribution, providing special operations forces with precise situational awareness.

C. Electronic Countermeasures: Leveraging its ultra-high resolution imaging and real-time processing capabilities, W-band SAR can operate stably in environments with strong electromagnetic interference. It automatically identifies the locations of enemy radar sites, communication nodes, and other radiation sources, and simultaneously generates 3D terrain-matching maps, supporting a closed loop of precision guidance and fire strikes.

III. Platform Adaptability

The W-band airborne synthetic aperture radar system, with its lightweight design (weighing only 2-3 kg), can be flexibly mounted on various UAVs to achieve high-resolution video imaging and real-time monitoring.

Tianjing Yunhu | MiniSAR: Full Polarimetric Imaging Capability

In the field of remote sensing today, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), visible light, and infrared together form a multi-layered observation system. Visible light remote sensing is intuitive and clear, while infrared remote sensing excels at thermal sensing. However, both are passive detection methods, heavily reliant on sunlight or the target's own thermal radiation. Once they encounter cloud cover, nightfall, or rainy/foggy weather, their detection capabilities are significantly reduced or even completely lost.

Tianjing Yunhu | P-band Airborne SAR Radar System

Low-frequency radars (such as P-band and L-band radars) can "see farther and see more clearly" because of their longer wavelengths, lower attenuation, and reduced sensitivity to stealth coatings. In modern air defense systems, they are key to anti-stealth radars. They can penetrate 1-meter-thick camouflage netting and 3-meter-thick bushes to identify hidden tanks and radar stations, and are less likely to trigger enemy warning systems, demonstrating significant advantages in covert detection.

Tianjing Yunhu | Miniature SAR Vehicle Target Dataset

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) target detection datasets are a core foundation for training and evaluating deep learning models. These datasets cover various target types, including ships, aircraft, vehicles, bridges, and oil tanks, and are applicable to multiple fields such as military reconnaissance, maritime monitoring, and traffic management. They not only provide high-resolution SAR images but also contain precise annotation information (category, location, size, etc.), ensuring improved algorithm performance.

Tianjing Yunhu | Airborne SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) Calibration Capability

Airborne SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) calibration refers to the calibration of various parameters of an airborne SAR system using specific methods to eliminate systematic and environmental errors, thereby ensuring the quality of SAR images, positioning accuracy, and the accuracy of inversion parameters. Airborne SAR calibration is mainly divided into three categories: geometric calibration, radiometric calibration, and polarimetric calibration.

UAV L-band Heavy Orbit Interferometric SAR System: Airborne Verification for Millimeter-Level Deformation Monitoring

Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR) technology, with its all-weather, 24/7 capability and high sensitivity to surface deformation, has become an important tool for geological hazard monitoring, ground subsidence investigation, and infrastructure health diagnosis. Integrating InSAR technology onto unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms further overcomes the limitations of long satellite revisit cycles, insufficient maneuverability, and high costs associated with manned operations, providing a new approach for regional, high-frequency, and high-precision deformation monitoring. However, the small size and susceptibility of UAV platforms to airflow disturbances make it difficult to maintain consistent flight paths during repeated flights, posing a significant challenge to double-track interferometry processing.
